Processing Times
Adjudication Timelines, Administrative Phases & Notification Protocols
Standard Processing Phases
Each ESTA declaration progresses through a structured sequence of administrative phases upon receipt. The timelines indicated below represent standard processing durations under normal operational conditions. Actual processing times are subject to variation based on submission volume, data verification requirements, security screening protocols, and the discretion of the adjudicating authority.
| Phase | Description | Estimated Duration | Applicant Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase I: Receipt & Validation | Initial intake of the declaration, format validation, data completeness check, and acknowledgment of submission to the Applicant. | Immediate | None required |
| Phase II: Data Verification | Cross-referencing of biographic and passport data against regulatory databases, verification of document formatting compliance, and internal consistency checks. | Up to 24 hours | None required |
| Phase III: Compliance Review | Assessment of eligibility criteria against statutory requirements, security screening protocol execution, and flagging of declarations requiring enhanced review. | 24–48 hours | None — unless additional information requested |
| Phase IV: Adjudication | Final determination by the adjudicating authority. The outcome is one of: Authorization Approved, Travel Not Authorized, or Pending — Additional Information Required. | Up to 72 hours | None — await determination |
| Phase V: Notification | Transmission of the formal determination to the Applicant via the registered correspondence address, including authorisation credentials where applicable. | Immediate upon determination | Review and retain confirmation |
Status Designations
Throughout the adjudication process, the declaration is assigned one of the following status designations. Each designation reflects the current administrative state of the declaration within the processing pipeline.
Pending — Under Review
The declaration has been received and is progressing through administrative review phases. No action is required from the Applicant at this time. The declaration will transition to the next applicable status upon completion of the current review phase.
Authorization Approved
The ESTA has been approved. The Applicant is authorised to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program for a period of up to two (2) years from the date of approval or until passport expiration, whichever occurs first. Multiple entries are permitted within this validity period, each not exceeding ninety (90) days.
Travel Not Authorized
The ESTA application has not been approved. The Applicant is not eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP and must apply for a nonimmigrant visa through the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. This determination does not necessarily preclude visa eligibility.
Pending — Additional Information Required
The adjudicating process has identified data discrepancies, incomplete fields, or conditions requiring supplementary documentation from the Applicant. A formal request detailing the required information and response deadline is transmitted to the registered email address. Failure to respond within the designated timeframe may result in administrative closure of the declaration.
Expired
The authorisation validity period has elapsed, or the passport linked to the ESTA has expired. The Applicant must submit a new declaration if further travel to the United States is intended.
Cancelled / Withdrawn
The declaration has been withdrawn at the request of the Applicant in accordance with the cancellation provisions outlined in the relevant section. A new declaration must be submitted if travel authorisation is subsequently required.
Factors Affecting Processing Timelines
The following factors may extend standard processing timelines beyond the estimated durations specified in the relevant section:
Elevated submission volumes during peak travel seasons (June–August, December–January)
Declarations flagged for enhanced security screening based on travel history or other risk indicators
Incomplete or inconsistent data requiring manual verification by adjudication personnel
System maintenance periods or technical interruptions affecting automated processing capabilities
Changes in regulatory requirements necessitating procedural adjustments mid-cycle
Requests for supplementary information pending Applicant response
